In an interview with Indiewire, visionary director Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that his upcoming film, the fantasy drama The Shape of Water, will be scored by the prolific Alexandre Desplat.
Desplat has previously worked in the animated film Rise of the Guardians, which del Toro produced, and most recently wrote the main theme for the animated series Trollhunters, co-created by del Toro and that has just debuted on Netflix. In the interview, when asked about how that came to pass del Toro replied:
Alexandre is also writing the score for The Shape of Water, the movie that I’m doing now. He did the score for one of the movies that we did at Dreamworks, Rise of the Guardians. We got along really, really well and I came out of that project in awe of his talent and his music. We knew from the start that we wanted him to write the main themes of the series.
Like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone, The Shape of Water is an otherworldly story set against the backdrop of a dramatic part of history, this time the Cold War in America. The film stars Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg and Octavia Spencer, and is currently in post-production. Del Toro wrote the script for the film with Vanessa Taylor (Divergent).
Next up for Desplat is Luc Besson’s sci-fi adventure Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
