The first trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ is all too predictable

It is clear that under their new ownership the Star Wars movies have become too afraid to attempt something different. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was basically a remake of A New Hope, and while on the surface Rogue One: A Star Wars Story appeared new and bold, it got so over-stuffed with fan service that it lost its chance to expand the universe beyond new merchandise options.

And now the first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the sequel to The Force Awakens, further confirms my fears that the movie might end up being another clone of the original trilogy. To be fair, the ending of The Force Awakens already pointed us in the direction of The Empire Strikes Back but really, does it have to be this close?

Obviously the story in The Last Jedi will focus on Rey being trained in desolate planet by Luke Skywalker. You can hear the wise words of the old Jedi Master, the young apprentice’s premonitions of danger for her friends, and even the mysterious cave makes an appearance at the end, all intertwined by shots of the Rebellion Resistance fighters having a bad time.

Perhaps I’m being too harsh, since this is just a teaser, but I honestly don’t see how the movie could be any better than their first two attempts. I know Rian Johnson is a great director, but so were J.J. Abrams and Gareth Edwards and both their movies were too afraid of displeasing fans of the original trilogy.

Do you agree or are you excited by what was shown in the trailer? Let me know in the comments.
