In heartbreaking news director Zack Snyder and her wife and producing partner Deborah have decided to step down from the post-production of Justice League to deal with a family tragedy.
Zack Snyder’s daughter Autumn committed suicide back in March at the very young age of 20, and though the filmmaker was intend on carrying on with his work as a form of catharsis, in the end he decided that he needs to take a break and spend time with his family so they can go through this difficult time.
In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was the way through it, said Snyder in a touching interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all-consuming. And in the last two months, I’ve come to the realization… I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.
The studio had considered to push back the release date of Justice League to allow some time to mourn but the Snyders refused and after previewing a rough cut of the film they decided that a few additional scenes were required and have appointed Joss Whedon to direct the additional shooting that was about to take place and guide the film through post-production.
What they are going through is unimaginable, and my heart — our hearts — go out to them, said Warner Bros. Pictures president Toby Emmerich, reassuring fans that the finished product will still be Snyder’s.
The directing is minimal and it has to adhere to the style and tone and the template that Zack set. We’re not introducing any new characters. It’s the same characters in some new scenes. He’s handing the baton to Joss, but the course has really been set by Zack. I still believe that despite this tragedy, we’ll still end up with a great movie.
Snyder who tried to keep the tragedy private and focus on his work is no stranger to causing Internet uproar, and is prepared for the incoming storm this news will cause:
Here’s the thing, I never planned to make this public, he says. I thought it would just be in the family, a private matter, our private sorrow that we would deal with. When it became obvious that I need to take a break, I knew there would be narratives created on the internet. They’ll do what they do. The truth is… I’m past caring about that kind of thing now.
I want the movie to be amazing and I’m a fan, but that all pales pretty quickly in comparison, he adds.
I know the fans are going to be worried about the movie, but there are seven other kids that need me. In the end, it’s just a movie. It’s a great movie. But it’s just a movie.
This is no doubt a hard time for Zack Snyder, his wife and kids. It is a shame that he won’t be able to finish a film that he has worked so hard on, but it is totally understandable. I just hope he and his family can find the peace and healing they need. And I also hope Joss Whedon can carry on with his legacy, style and his vision for Justice League.
My prayers go to Zack and Deborah on this difficult time.
