There has been a discussion during months regarding the rating that Prometheus would receive for its run in theaters but today 20th Century Fox confirmed that the rating will be indeed R.
Being a kind of a prequel to Alien, an R rating seemed the most appropriate thing to do, since all films in said franchise have been given that rating (no, the AVP films don’t count). And while the rating of a film doesn’t really dictate its quality or intensity, it does allow for more graphic images and stronger themes.
There was some concern that the studio could force Ridley Scott into fitting Prometheus in the PG-13 category in order to make more money, and even in interviews the director was rather unspecific about his intentions.
It’s great to know that in the end the studio decided for the film’s integrity and I’m sure audiences will respond with appreciation.
